MD and MSC Nastran 2011 Release Highlights

We are pleased to announce the latest release of MD Nastran. This release focuses on a broad range of performance enhancements. New capabilities in optimization, rotor dynamics and aeroelasticity are also available to help users attain higher productivity.

Some of the key enhancements in this release include:
·         High Performance Computing (HPC): Various enhancements implemented in this release enable efficient usage of computing resources and provide faster performance resulting in higher productivity.
o   ACMS – Automated Component Modal Synthesis (ACMS) now supports structural damping and combined use of enforced motion (SPCD) and frequency dependent analysis. Speed improvements of up to 500% were seen during testing for some analysis scenario.
o   Enhanced Math Kernel Library – By taking greater advantage of the math kernel, MD Nastran achieves significant improvements in computational speeds. In addition, enhancements to the multi-threaded Shared Memory Parallel (SMP) capability demonstrated speed up improvements of up to 100% for the following tasks.

§ Matrix factorization
§ Mixed model (real times complex) matrix multiplication
o   Automatic Scratch Memory (SMEM) Allocation – Scratch memory required is automatically computed in MD Nastran 2011, resulting in significant reduction in the amount of disk I/O required and faster run times.
·         Aeroelasticity – Enhancements to splining capability help users achieve improved performance for large models
·         External Optimizer with OpenMDO – OpenMDO interface provides a convenient method to harvest the power of MD Nastran solver. It also provides a method for users to plug in third party optimizers which can benefit both commercial users and researchers who may want to use or test their own optimizers.
·         Rotordynamics – MD Nastran 2011 allows users to provide their own Simulation Component Architecture (SCA) object to calculate properties of CBUSH2D elements. In addition, it is possible to use ROMAC (University of Virginia Rotating Machinery and Controls Laboratory) THPAD routine to calculate the properties of a tilting pad journal bearing. These enhancements help you address ground based rotor systems more efficiently.
·         Thermal Analysis Performance – Iterative solver is now supported in SOL 400 for thermal analysis, enabling you to conduct static and transient thermal analysis of large models more efficiently.
·         Quality - Software fixes have also been implemented in this release resulting in higher quality and robust product.
