 Marc 2021.1: The Performance and Flexibility to Model Complex Multi-Stage Structural Analysis Problems

Note: With a continued focus on best-in-class  nonlinear geometrical and material behavior, Marc has moved to a quarterly release cadence so customers can benefit from more frequent updates throughout the year.

About the 2021.1 Release

In this first release of 2021, Marc 2021.1 is delivering improvements to model sections that provide robust continuity of the model state between simulations of complex multi-stage scenarios most commonly occurring in manufacturing.  This release further improves the efficiency and flexibility (expanded scope) of a model section.

Marc also continues to deliver performance and ease-of-use improvements that apply to a wide range of simulations to further its role as a world class solver for nonlinear problems.  In this release, the focus was on contact, the MUMPS solver and Mentat. 

Finally, improvements were also made to better support simulations where internal reinforcements (rebar) must be modeled discretely in a bulk material, most generally applicable to tire simulation.


Release Highlights

Some main highlights of the Marc 2021.1 include:

  • Multi-Stage Simulations: Ablation

    • Support of ATAS (Advanced Thermal Analysis Software) analysis with Model

    • Sections has been extended to support the Streamline Pyrolysis Model

    • Stretch and the Multi-Zone remeshers are now supported in Model Sections

  • Multi-Stage Simulations:Performance

Model section files can be compressed to significantly reduce file size and overall simulation time

  • Contact Modeling Performance

    • Faster performance of contact for exact CAD geometry (3D NURBS based geometric bodies with many trimming curves)

    • Faster performance in 2D contact simulations using the segment-to-segment method.

  • MUMPS Solver Performance

    • General speed-up in many simulations when using the MUMPS solver due to a more efficient implementation

    • Reduced memory consumption on the parent domain with the default pre-conditioner when using DDM.

  • Mentat Performance and Other Improvements

    • Faster performance of Mentat via more efficient redraws, most noticeable with larger models

    • Improved speed of execution for procedure files

    • Mentat now allows the creation of images of arbitrary size from the current graphics window

  • Reinforcement Enhancements (Tire Modeling)

    • ​Cylindrical expansion feature for rebar elements has been updated to include Pre-Strain

    • Improved checks are made for the physical validity of the post-expansion orientation angle

    • Consistent rebar properties are established in 3D structures even when a coarse mesh is used in the circumferential direction to accelerate convergence

  • MARC Verification Guide

The Marc Verification Guide has been updated with 52 sample NAFEMS benchmark problems.

The examples are organized according to specific areas: Linear Elastic, Heat Transfer, Free Vibration, Forced Vibration, and Nonlinear Benchmark problems.
