Abstract (Question)

Is there anything different about installing Adams 2010 (or MD 2010) on Windows 7 as compared to Windows XP?

Description (Answer)

Windows 7 (as well as Windows Vista) have somewhat more stringent security than does Windows XP.  As a result the installation procedure is slightly different.

Note that you must install the 64-bit version of Adams on Windows 7 x64.  (Windows XP x64 will allow 32-bit Adams but Windows 7 x64 will not.)  Of course, you must install 32-bit Adams on the 32-bit version of Windows 7.

You must right-click on the Adams 2010 installer application and select Run As Administrator even if you are logged into the computer as an administrator:

 Run As Administrator

If you simply double-click on the installer you will likely see this error message about write permissions for the C:\WINDOWS directory:

 Windows 7 install error

After installation, users may find that the application doesn't launch correctly.  If the environment variable MSC_ADAMS_STARTIN_DIR hasn't been set then Adams/View will try to write files to the directory where the shortcut is located (typically the Desktop or Start Menu).  Both of these locations are protected by Windows security thus preventing the application from running.  This issue is covered in detail in article KI8008065 (see below).  You can either set MSC_ADAMS_STARTIN_DIR or directly modify the shortcut.  Note that modifying a shortcut in Windows 7 requires Administrator privileges.
